Job description

Our client, one of the prestigious Cambridge colleges, is looking for a reliable and diligent individual to join their Catering Department as Cleaning & Support Staff. This position will involve maintaining high standards of cleanliness and supporting the Food Service and Kitchen teams to ensure smooth, efficient, and cost-effective operations across all catering areas of the college, and when necessary, the President’s Lodge.

 

Overall Purpose of the Role:
The primary responsibility of this position is to uphold cleanliness and hygiene standards throughout the Catering Department. You will be a key player in maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient environment that supports the food service and kitchen teams in delivering a high-quality experience.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Health & Safety & Hygiene:

  • Ensure strict compliance with all statutory regulations, including Health & Safety, Food Safety Management, Allergen policies, and the College’s internal procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of your own health & safety and that of others in the workplace.
  • Ensure adherence to personal hygiene standards, fire safety protocols, and COSHH regulations; report any potential hazards or breaches promptly.
  • Wear clean and presentable uniform and protective clothing at all times while on duty.
  • Report any evidence of pests or insects to the senior management team.
  • Notify management of any equipment malfunctions, maintenance needs, or safety concerns.
  • Complete daily cleaning and hygiene schedules in line with departmental guidelines.
  • Ensure the security of catering areas and report any security vulnerabilities immediately.

 

Cleaning and Hygiene Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain all cleaning equipment according to safety guidelines and manufacturer instructions.
  • Clean all equipment, work areas, and food service areas according to cleaning schedules, ensuring all tools are returned to their correct storage locations.
  • Dispose of food waste in line with the College’s food safety and waste management policies.
  • Empty waste bins daily and dispose of waste according to the College’s recycling program.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the refuse area and loading bay as per the department’s environmental policy.
  • Assist with the termly deep cleaning process and be flexible to work across various departments.

 

Housekeeping and General Duties:

  • Ensure sufficient supply of cleaning materials and chemicals, managing usage effectively and efficiently to minimize waste.
  • Maintain cleanliness in staff rooms, changing areas, and toilets.
  • Refill hand soap dispensers, roller towels, and other cleaning supplies as needed.
  • Complete table and chair arrangements for events and functions.
  • Assist with the transportation of food, wine, and catering equipment to various locations on the College grounds.
  • Help with the unpacking and storage of deliveries when required.

 

Miscellaneous:

  • Undertake any other duties as directed by the Catering Management Team.
  • Establish positive relationships with Fellows, students, staff, conference delegates, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times regarding sensitive information.

Person Specification:

 

Essential:

  • Prior experience in cleaning duties, preferably in a food handling, hospitality, or commercial kitchen environment.
  • Good command of the English language to follow instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow within the catering industry.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work independently as needed.
  • Ability to handle fast-paced and pressure-driven work environments.
  • A practical, problem-solving attitude with flexibility and a “can-do” approach.
  • Capability to perform manual handling tasks, including heavy lifting, in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Smart appearance with a high standard of personal hygiene and grooming.

 

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations specific to catering and food hygiene.
  • Basic understanding of COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations.
  • Previous experience in large-scale catering operations.
